Magical Mixed Media: A Droll Diarama by Red Grooms

Red Grooms (born Charles Rogers Grooms on June 7, 1937) is an American multimedia artist best known for his vibrant pop-art creations depicting frenzied scenes of everyday urban life. Grooms was born in Nashville, Tennessee during the middle of the Great Depression. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, then at Nashville's Peabody College. In 1956, Grooms moved to New York City, to enroll at the New School for Social Research. After studying under Hans Hoffman the following year in 1957, Grooms co-founded City Gallery in midtown Manhattan.

Today, Grooms is identified as a pioneer of site-specific sculpture and largescale immersive installations. Grooms is well known for capturing the true sense of a place through his exquisite attention to detail in his craft. Grooms signature pieces are coined as "sculpto-pictoramas," which fuse together the arts of painting and sculpture. His artwork is typically vibrant, colorful, and often contain whimsical cartoon-like characters in architecturally ornate scenes.

Bunch Auctions is proud to present a new addition by Red Grooms to our April 25th Fine Art Catalog Auction. The mixed media sculpture, titled Fairy Tale Scenes, was created by Grooms with the assistance from his wife Lysianne Luong and Mark Hooper. Fairy Tale Scenes is a scale model, 3/4" to 1 foot, and is signed and dated 1986. The scene depicts a princess on a horse, and a unicorn-driven carriage riding over a bridge towards a magical castle. We are excited to have this unique piece round out our eclectic art sale. Other highlights from the sale include: Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Wharton Esherick, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dalí, Benton Murdoch Spruance, Jacqueline De Butler, José de Creeft, Leroy Nieman, Bernard Buffet, Ellsworth Woodward, and Jean Cocteau alongside works from the collection of Anna Breslford McCoy as well as works by Helena Beacham and many others.
